Norwood Scale 1 Baldness

Norwood Scale 1 Baldness

At the Norwood Scale 1 stage, adolescent hairlines evolve into adult ones. Although not a sign of actual baldness, this stage often signifies the onset of male pattern hair loss. Early intervention strategies, such as medications or minimally invasive transplants, can help stabilise and maintain hair health. Let us guide you on your path to effective hair management.

Norwood Scale 1 Hair Transplant

The Norwood Scale, also referred to as the Hamilton-Norwood Scale, is a classification system for identifying and classifying the various phases of male-pattern baldness. It was developed by Dr James Hamilton in the 1950s and later refined by Dr O’Tar T. Norwood twenty years later. The revised version remains the most widely used classification system for male hair loss today.

The scale measures the progression of hair loss. Therefore, higher numbers on the scale correlate with a greater degree of hair loss. Male pattern baldness is characterised by an overabundance of DHT (dihydrotestosterone), a male sex hormone similar to testosterone. Numerous other factors contribute to hair loss. Your age, ethnicity, genetic makeup, and hair colour will determine how much hair you might lose and whether you are a suitable candidate for a hair transplant.

Norwood Stage 1 typically signifies an adolescent hairline. It isn’t actual baldness but represents the first stage in maturing from a teenage hairline to an adult male hairline. We wouldn’t recommend transplanting someone with Norwood 1 stage of hair loss as it could damage healthy hair. We would also want to observe how the hair loss might progress over time. If there is any sign of future hair loss, we may advise medication or a Norwood 1 hair transplant to stop the hair thinning.

Most of the time at this stage, any potential thinning can be managed with one or both of the only FDA-approved medications, Propecia and/or Rogaine. Both these medications have been clinically tested and proven to reverse the balding process. They are effective in 90% of patients whilst they are being used. If you stop using them, their effects will diminish and your typical balding process will resume.

However, there are alternative ways to maintain healthy hair apart from using medications that may promote hair growth, including:

Consuming extra protein, especially for vegetarians or vegans. A daily need for protein is 40–60 grammes (g). The Mediterranean diet, comprising fruits, vegetables, and protein, may help minimise hair loss. Additionally, certain vitamins and minerals, including vitamins A, B, C, D, E, zinc, and iron, help to maintain healthy hair, skin, and muscle tissue. Lastly, learning stress management techniques. Because stress can make your androgens more active, which can lead to male pattern baldness.

Even with medication and a healthy diet, if your hair continues to shed, you may consider a hair transplant procedure. Our advanced direct hair transplant technique is perfect for Norwood Scale 1 hair transplant. It is an updated version of the FUE procedure. This technique is painless and does not require scalpels. The aim of this method is to increase the survival and growth of hair follicles by minimising their handling and exposure to air. Post-surgery, patients experience rapid healing and spontaneous hair growth.
